Is this the Cost of Justice

Rape Crisis (England and Wales) is aware of the proposals for reducing sentencing for rapists who plead guilty at the first opportunity.  This change will however, only affect a small proportion of the women and girls we work with as currently rape is still a massively unreported crime.

Currently the majority of rape cases do not end in criminal convictions and any moves to improve the conviction rate will be welcomed, so long as such changes do not trivialise or add to the trauma of the victim and the impact the assault has had on her life.

We further believe that only in those cases where the evidence is overwhelming, will a rapist feel inclined to plead guilty. In such instances, a conviction would have been the likely outcome in any case.

Rape Crisis (England and Wales) will closely monitor the impact of these proposals on women and girls who use our services.”
